Dispute Resolution Services (DRS) of Gryphon Place offers low-no cost mediation services for Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Barry county. Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution that can be used amidst or outside the judicial process. The process provides a potential way for the involved parties to resolve a conflict in a safe and confidential setting. Mediation is led by a mediator; a trained, impartial, third party who assists the mediation participants in communicating about the dispute as well as, discussion of any ways to resolve it. DRS has mediators available to handle many types of conflict such as landlord/tenant disputes, family matters, school issues, special education disputes, small claims and general civil court cases, elder conflicts and more.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Michigan Certified mediators have the opportunity to donate their time as a volunteer through Dispute Resolution Services (DRS) of Gryphon Place. DRS mediates over 100 cases each year and the majority of cases are classified as domestic. Thanks to the dedication and phenomenal mediation talents of our volunteers; 72% DRS’s 111 cases from 2016 reached a resolution.
DRS does not impose a minimum completion of service hours to volunteer. The DRS Case Manager works with all volunteers to schedule and manage one’s desired service donation. Our case manager will coordinate via email with individuals interested in mediating or observing a case. DRS serves three counties (Kalamazoo, Calhoun and Barry) and occasionally provides a volunteer with the chance to mediate outside of the Kalamazoo office. Most off-site mediations are held at the respective county’s courthouse. Mediation is regularly scheduled Monday-Friday at 9AM or 1PM and volunteers should anticipate requests within that window. DRS is an ever-expanding department with new and exciting prospects arising throughout the year, in a variety of ways. Qualified volunteers help deliver a tremendous service to not only DRS as a department but the Southwest Michigan Community it serves. DRS volunteers come from all walks of life however, they often include: active and retired attorneys, paralegals, social workers, court clerks, community leaders, teachers, advocates, psychologists, counselors, engineers and perhaps… YOU!
