Education & Volunteer Coordinator (AmeriCorps, Part Time)

This is a part-time AmeriCorps service member position with a requirement to serve for a minimum of 900 hours in a one year term (approx. 20 hrs/wk) at Community Homeworks.  Upon successful completion of the service year, the member will be eligible for a $2,887.50 education award to pay off existing student loans or return to school.  Service period will last one year from start date (March, 2017 – February, 2018).

Candidates will also need to submit an AmeriCorps application, participate in a phone interview with the AmeriCorps Program Manager at Habitat for Humanity of Michigan, and attend two days of training as part of the selection process.

Role and Responsibilities
The member at Community Homeworks will support the homeowner repair and maintenance education program, one part of a comprehensive package of programs designed to help low-income families meet the challenges of affordably sustaining their homes. The goal of the program is to teach homeowners the importance of maintaining their homes and give them the skills to do so. The member serving in this capacity will:

1. Coordinate and host educational offerings for Community Homeworks families, Habitat for
Humanity partners, and the low income community.
2. Recruit potential applicants for education program. Partner with other community
organizations to expand outreach & recruitment efforts.
3. Assist in case management process including processing applications, meeting one-on-one
with homeowners to guide them through the process and assess their needs, and tracking
completion of attendance requirements.
4. Work with partner organizations to track and report on client attendance.
5. Support existing curricula, content, and materials; update as needed to meet the needs of attendees, partner agencies, and the community we serve.
6. Assist in recruiting and retaining volunteers in support of the program, including workshop instructors.
7. Maintain accurate records and program data.
8. Work as part of the organizational team that provides comprehensive programming for the families we serve.
9. Occasional driving is necessary to perform some duties.
10. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  1. High school diploma or GED required.
  2. Minimum of 18 year of age, US citizen or permanent resident status.
  3. College coursework or degree in community development, non-profit, or education fields preferred but not required.
  4. Pass a criminal background and sex offender registry check.
  5. Must have excellent interpersonal communications skills, both one on one and in large groups.
  6. Ability to work a flexible schedule (some nights and weekends will be required).

Preferred Skills

  1. College coursework or degree in community development, non-profit, or education fields preferred but not required.
  2. Experience and skill in working with people of diverse backgrounds.
  3. Excellent writing and organizational skills.
  4. Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Office and Publisher required.
  5. Must have own transportation (mileage is reimbursed).
